The Civil War was a war between the states. A war for or against slavery and states' rights within the United States. England and much of Europe tinkered with the idea of entering on the side of the South with the idea of gaining lost territory from the Revolutionary War, but the Emancipation Proclamation convinced them otherwise. France was also very interested in helping the South, but never did.

Not until late in the war was a battlefield victory exploited.
it was about the states right to decide on their own laws. in this case, many wanted to be able to have the right to own slaves, and others thought it was not right for people to own other people. So the states in the union decided there should be a federal law that prohibits owning and selling slaves. The southern states were very dependent on slave labor for their agricultural based society and did not want to give up the rights to their slaves and fought and decided to seceed from the union of states.

They wanted to in some instance; but were encouraged or induced to in others.

Either the questioner does not comprehend what a civil war is; or is actually trying to ask what caused civil war to break out in the U. S.

In the latter instance, the question is too broad to be answered in a forum such as this. Books and courses are available by which to learn about the Civil War. In the former instance, questioner needs to consider, that a civil war takes place on the combatants' own territory between members and sections of its own population. No matter what degree of participation any person takes in a civil conflict, even if only a bystander, all people are involved, like it or not, in civil war on their territory. It was no different with the American Civil War. That war came to all inhabitants, military and civilian, on both sides. They were all involved, as it were, by default, because there was no escaping being involved. For many, if not most, however, there was the added inducement to become voluntarily involved out of fear of losing their accustomed traditions and ways of life. And, as with any war, many participate in the expectation of personal advancement or gain and/or for glory.
