Technically it didn't. Many of our troops defected. It was politically defamed almost unilaterally. We also lost many of the most important battles.

The reason we won was mostly due to the fact that the majority of the land that was obtained from Mexico was almost entirely devoid of Mexicans living there.

California was already revolting against Mexico. Texas had already declared independence and then joined the US. The entire south of Mexico (now the countries comprising Central America) had separated 20 years earlier leaving them with infrastructure issues. They were suffering infighting and the roots of a civil war and hadn't upgraded their arms as they were still using muskets when we had already upgraded to breech loading rifles.

So, really we won due to advanced rifles and poor timing on behalf of Santa Anna.

Attrition. At the time, Mexico had a population of some 6 million while the United States had a population of almost 21 million. Even if Mexico had a greater technological advantage (it didn't), it would have been swept by increasing waves of American recruits.

It is if by today's standards, the US was invaded by Chinese forces (311 million vs 1400 million). Without the use of nuclear weapons, the US would be certainly overrun sooner or later.

The reason that the US fought with the Mexican war is that the US-Mexican War was a military conflict fought between the United States and Mexico in the years 1846 to 1848, in the wake of the U.S. annexation of Texas in 1845. Mexico had always refused to recognize the loss of Texas in 1836 and announced its intention to take back what it considered a rebel province. In the United States, the war was a partisan issue, supported by most Democrats and opposed by most Whigs. Popular belief in the Manifest Destiny of the United States ultimately translated into public support for the war. In Mexico, the war was considered a matter of national pride.

The most important consequence of the war was the Mexican Cession, in which the Mexican territories of California and New Mexico were ceded to the United States. The question of extending slavery to these new territories was a catalyst that helped bring on the American Civil War just 15 years later. In Mexico, the enormous loss of territory which resulted from the war encouraged the central government to enact policies to colonize its northern territories as a hedge against further losses.

In the U.S., the war is sometimes called the Mexican War. In Mexico, it is called la intervención norteamericana (the North American Intervention) or la guerra del 47 (the War of '47).

A much bigger population. At the time, the United States had a population of over 19.7 million, while Mexico had barely 6 million by the end of 1845. This also meant that even if Mexico had a better equipped army, it would eventually fall to a war of attrition.

It is as if today, barring nuclear weapons, the US fought a war against China. No matter how well equiped would the US troops be, it is highly unlikely that it would win against an adversary so big in terms of population.
