It was a last push by the confederate army. They were losing the war, and Gettysburg was an important spot for the Union. If they took that, it would be a stronghold and a chance to win the war. Without that, the confederates had no chance. The confederates hit it hard, so many Union died. However, the union was able to hold Gettysburg, PA.

Lee felt that he had to win a decisive victory on Northern soil in order to bring about a Southern Victory. He also hoped to draw Union troops away from the siege of Vicksburg. He thought that by putting pressure on the Northern population centers, through an invasion, he could force Washington to the negotiating table. It would also take some of the burden of prosecuting the war from his native Virginia where most of the battles in the East had occurred. It allowed Lee to forage needed supplies in from the enemy. Northern scouts came into contact with Lee's forces on the outskirts of Gettysburg, ans a battle of encounter ensued when Union forces took the high ground across Lee's most likely course of retreat, forcing him to fight a battle for which he was not fully prepared, from a disadvantage in numbers, position, and supplies.
