because they were promised free land if they move west and the easiest way west was the Oregon trail the reason they were offered free land was so America would expand westward into the newly purched Louisiana purchase

It was the emigrant trail that began at the Missouri River and took the settelers to what is now California. The eastern half of it overlapped the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail. It was also the favored route used by the 49ers in the Gold Rush and existed from 1845 to 1869 when the Transcontinental Railway was completed.

Some people walked simply because they couldn't afford to buy a wagon, ox (or mule) team and all the supplies. It cost about $ 600 to $800 which was a lot of money. Some jobs at that time only paid $4 or $5 a week so by the time the person paid for their food and lodgings, there wasn't much left to save.

So walking was affordable.
