He meant that the Christian is Not saved by the works they do, (although it does not hurt to do good works for your fellow human beings). He meant that the Christian is saved because they accept Jesus as the Christ and Savior, and that He died on the cross to save the human race from being held accountable for their sins. There are no works a human being can do to save themselves. They must accept Jesus as their savior and live a Christian live in order to be saved.
Because of the many verses in The Bible that state so.
Ephesians 2:8 - God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
Romans 10:9-10 - " If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved"
Those are just a few of the many verses that prove that works do not prove a person saved.
Martin Luther believed that you can only get to heaven by faith alone, not by good works or leading a holy life. This is what present day Lutherans believe
He at first mainly attacked the selling of indulgences in the church and then later on added ideas of "salvation by faith alone" and how to live as our savior Christ did.

salvation by faith alone
Because back then people in certain parts of the world wanted others to believe only in one god (some people nowadays still do). There were many false gods, and when the Christians refused to worship them, the idol-worshipers became angry and killed/hurt many Christians. Also, while many Christians died for their faith in Jesus Christ in the first few centuries following Christ's death, Christians have been martyred in every century under Imperial Rome, then Ecclesiastical Papal Rome until the time of the Reformation. Since then, millions were butchered under Communist regimes, and Fundamentalist Islamic regimes. One point that many are not aware of, is that more Christians were put to death for their faith in the last century alone, than any of the preceeding centuries combined. The trend is accelerating, not easing up, we just dont hear much about these things in the United States.

Christians firmly believe that Jesus is the divine Son of God, and most Christians believe he is one with God.Muslims believe that Jesus Christ is not 'The God.' "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone" [Mark 10:18]
Yes. Luther taught that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the path to salvation. However he also belived by "Faith alone, by Grace alone, by Christ alone- there lies our Salvation. Lutheran's also believe that Christ's Sacraments- Baptism and Holy Communion are a "Means of Grace"- where Jesus Christ is attached through Water, Bread and Wine-The True Body and Blood of our Lord.
Do you mean Roman Catholic? If so many Christians believe that salvation is brought about by faith alone in Christ alone, without works.

The biggest difference in beliefs alone is that Christians believe that Jesus is Christ while Muslims believe that Jesus was a great prophet although the greatest prophet in Islam is Muhammad.

The most important doctrine for Luther was the doctrine of justification - God's act of declaring a sinner righteous. Luther came to realise that a person is justified /put right with God by faith alone through God's grace. He began to teach that salvation or redemption is a gift of God's grace, attainable only through faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Luther wrote that Christians receive such righteousness entirely from outside themselves. Righteousness not only comes from Christ but actually is the righteousness of Christ, imputed to Christians through faith.
No, Christians believe that there is only one God and that is the God of the Bible, who is the creator of all. he alone is worthy to be worshipped.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are Christian. They worship Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and believe that salvation comes through Jesus alone. They also use the KJV Bible as Scripture and believe that it is the word of God. You can learn more about what Mormons believe and what makes them Christians at the "Related Links" below.
