The first wave of immigrants came to the UK in 1948 on a boat from Jamaica called the 'Empire Windrush'. By 1960, many more had followed them and there were substantial areas of the big cities with a large immigrant population and this led to tensions between the indigenous population and the newcomers which culminated with the Notting Hill Riots in the mid 1960's.

In the UK at the time there was a serious shortage of labour, particularly for menial jobs such as street sweepers, hospital porters and bus and train crews. The British Government started an advertising campaign in former British Colonies - what are now Commonwealth countries - particularly in the Caribbean Islands, to encourage people to go to the UK to fill these jobs. It worked!
