gladiators had to fight because they were slaves and their masters told them to do it.when in the arena they had to fight and win or fight well and lose or they would be killed.they did not want to die but part of their code was to die with honor,not flinching when the victor sliced his thoat and kneeling on 1 knee to await their death calmly.

gladiators fought each other as public entertainment though the practice stated as funeral games to please dead sprits.most were forced to fight and only a few were volunteers. those volunteers were either looking for fame and money though some were looking to pay of depts or wanted to do it for the thril of it.

They fought each other and animals in arenas. They often started out as captured warriors from a war and were sold into slavery as gladiators. There were gladiator schools and owner/investors. It was a big business. Sometimes a slave gladiator could gain his freedom by fighting well in the arena. This didn't happen often, but it did happen. They became famous. One of the biggest schools for gladiator's was across from the present site of theColosseum . They were so close to it that a tunnel connected the school to the Colosseum.
