Dell Computers decided to move from direct retailing to chains such as Walmart and Best Buy, among other retail giants, (such as Cost-Co and Sam's Club) due to falling profits. Dell executives pointed out that the direct retailing was limiting, due to the direct-sales model seeming to be broken.

Sunil Chopra, the Associate Dean of Curriculum and Teaching and IBM Distinguished Professor of Operations Management at the Kellogg School of Management, pointed out that Dell would need to move from the direct-sales model in order to remain competitive. Approximately six months after, Dell started offering it's Dimension personal computers (PCs) and their Inspiron Notebooks through Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.

Difference between store retailing and non store retailing?

One major difference between store and non-store retailing is location. To do store retailing, it has to have a physical location, or a "brick and mortar" presence that a customer can physically go to. In non store retailing, there is no physical location for customers to pick up their good, and instead, they get them through automatic vending machines, television, video, Internet, direct selling, and direct marketing.
