cubism was invented shortly after the camera and artists thouht well if the camera can take pictures of things that look exactly how you see them so whats the point of us painting it. so they decided to figure out a new way to draw images. that's how they figured out cubism because they basically just wanted to show people an image from all sorts of angles!!!!!!
its all on the perspective
Cubism was pioneered by European artists such as Picasso and Braque. It seems as if they were inspired by foreign art, such as art from Africa, America, and Micronesia. They used cubism as a way to express simplicity, and how powerful it could be. It was unique, which were trademarks of those artists in general and it was raw and powerful which made it striking and memorable. It expresses confusion and simplicity at the same time, a reason for which art may have been created to begin with.
Cubism began because when the camera was invented in the 1840s artists felt like they were redundant, as, if someone wanted a portrait done they would just arrange to get their picture taken. It was quicker and more accurate. So artists realised that they needed to find a way of making their portraits different from that of the cameras to stay in business. So they developed a style where the subject can be seen from all different angles in the same picture. Cubism was born.
Cubism is a style of art created in the 1920's * by two famous painters Pablo Picasso and George Braque. They both used a lot of cubism in their paintings. Cubism is a type of art that shows movement through **time. That means that instead of painting someone stiff, the artist would paint them to were they looked like they were moving.
Another thing you do in cubism is you break down the object (person or thing) into geometric shapes. That way instead of showing one face, the artist could use small shapes to show more than one.
*) No, it was in 1908.
**) That 'moving in time' idea was more the concept of Futurism. In Paris there was a very intensive debate circa 1910-1914 in which the Futurist artists accused the Cubists that they were re-establishing the classical way of art, an art without movement! Look the quotes by Boccioni for instance; follow link.
I think Cubism was mainly concentrated on observing the object from different directions - so only movement in space - and not in time. Their nude didn't move - or the bottle, or the guitar - in Cubism.
When the cubist artists were getting ready to do cubism, the first thing they did was they drew a sketch and drew the shapes on another piece of paper. Then, they would do the changes on the final sheet of paper. The last thing you do in cubism would be the shapes, shade in the picture, and then the picture would be complete.
Cubism is modern art made up mostly of paintings. The paintings are not supposed to look real. The artist uses geometric shapes to show what he is trying to paint. Early cubists used mainly grays, browns, greens, and yellows. After 1914, Cubists started to use brighter colors. Cubism was the beginning of the Abstract and Non-objective art styles.
Important Cubist artists were, Picasso and Georges Braque, Juan Gris and Fernand Leger. Metzinger and Feininger made a real school out of the start of Cubism.
