It's written in one of Arthur Conan Doyle's bibliographies. According to that text, it says that Doyle got bored and sick of Holmes (though I can't think how anybody could be sick of Holmes) and killed him off in the Reichenbach Falls during his fight with Moriarty.

He killed off Sherlock Holmes for several reasons. 1) He got fed up with writing him. The books were immensely popular in England when he wrote them, and were clammering for more. 2) He wanted the public (and himself) to focus on his other stories. 3) He hated writing the Sherlock Holmes stories because they were difficult to write.

That's why he killed him off, though I couldn't tell you why he brought him back, probably because he failed at getting the public to pay attention to his other stories.

Hope it helped!

As early as 1891 Doyle felt that Sherlock Holmes took his mind from better things and he wearied of his name.

The first time was because he became tired of the character.

The second time because he quit writing all together.
