St. Peter because he was directly commissioned by Jesus to assume the mantel of leader of the early Christian community. In this regard, Simon Peter was referred to as the Big Fisherman, harking back to Jesus' words in calling Peter, "Follow me and I will make you a fisher of men."

St. Paul because he was the Apostle to the Gentiles and did much to evangelize and establish the early Christian churches throughout Asia Minor in the 1st Century CE.

Both suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Nero at Rome.
