He originally did not go by choice. He was kidnapped to be brought as a slave to Ireland. After escaping he came to Ireland of his own choice later in his life, in order to preach Christianity in Ireland.

When he was only 16 years of age, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold as a slave in Ireland. 6 years later he finally escaped and, eventually, ended up in Europe where he studied to become a priest. Pope Celestine I appointed him a bishop and asked him to return to Ireland as a missionary.

During the years Patrick was held slave in Ireland, he became closer to God. He finally escaped and returned to his family in England and there decided to follow a religious life.
He states that he had dreams and heard the islanders calling him back to Ireland to preach the gospel. He eventually was given permission to return by the church even though he was probably considered unfit for such a dangerous mission. To bring Christianity to the Irish. He was ultimately sent back by Pope Celestine I.
