A: The Russian Empire discovered Alaska somewhere in the 1800's. At this particular time, every country in the world was extremely poor and had harsh challenges like, exploring new worlds, finding new supplies, and did not even good enough technologies. The world struggled from the Roman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. The Russians suffered deeply from this. So, they sold Alaska to the Americans to gain more richness in their country. Today, Russia's land expansion is two to three times larger than America. Which leads them to the wealthiest country in the world. America and China are tied up with each other today. Russia has a poor economy still, because of their government. Their government overtakes thousands of homes and houses today. Russia has a harsh government in the past decade.

∙ 12y agoMany people, at the time, thought that it was a stupid decision on Secretary of State William H. Seward's part, which started the name Seward's Folly. His idea, though, was when Alaska was purchased, it would lead to being able to expand the US borders even wider by allowing the US to take over get Canada, too.

∙ 7y agoRussia did not give Alaska to the US. Alaska's location was the most eastern part of their huge nation. Alaska was a large cold place, parts of it were above the Arctic Circle. Secretary Seward negotiated a good deal with the Russians to buy Alaska for about $7.2 million. Many Americans laughed at the idea of purchasing this "albatross", however it turned out to be a great deal for the US.
