His microscope was what we would call primitive. He only looked at dead cells and only found the walls around plants cells. He could not see anything else. What he did see were very tiny groups of tiny boxes. He called them cells as they were very small and were mostly alike. The idea of 'cell' reminded him of the tiny rooms that monks slept and worked in.

well he was really looking at cork then he discovered similar compartments and named them cells
