Singapore was in the south of Dutch Melaka and Penang could also be used to protect the British shipping so as to trade along the straits of Melaka

Singapore has timbers to repair the ships that are involved in the British trading. Singapore also had a few natural advantages. It has deep waters and there was seasonal wind to transport the trading ships.

Singapore occupied a better position as compared to Penang and Bencoolen. It has natural advantages as an excellent harbour and a good supply of drinking water. It is also a good commanding position to protect ships against pirate attacks.

There are reasons why Stamford Raffles chose Singapore to be a British trading port. Firstly, it was due to European rivalry and Dutch Monopoly in the region (the Dutch controlled a large area of the Malay Archipelago at that time and were therefore Britain's biggest rival in South East Asia), secondly, it was due to the unsuitability of penang and Bencoolen as trading ports (the positions in which they were situated at were not in a position to protect Britain's trading ships using the Straits); Melaka was in a much better position but it was owned by the Dutch. Raffles found many advantages in Singapore; he realised that it was in a commanding position to protect the trading ships between China and India as Britain's trade with China and India had become very lucrative.

Hope this helped!(;

What are the problems faced by early settlers in Singapore and their solutions?

There were several problems that contributed to the difficulty of establishing European settlements in Singapore. First of all, the effort was under-funded. The arrangement for rule split power between Sr. Thomas Raffles, and Major William Farquhar, who didn't share the same leadership styles. For example, when Raffles had to depart for a period of time, leaving Farquhar in control, he returned to find that licenses had been given out to set up gambling operations, and sell opium. Rafferty was opposed to both. Fortunately, he was able to work a deal to get Farquhar sent away.
