Lennie, if you don't already know, loves soft things. As you read in the book, Of Mice and Men, many times Lennie will pick up a mouse (dead or alive) a pet it. Until, accidentilly he will kill it because Lennie is unnormally strong! Lennie doesn't mean to hurt anything, he is like a child and needs comfort. So in order for Lennie to get comfort, he feels a womans dress, she screams, and Lennie holds on to it because he is scared, and doesn't reallize what was going on, and he doesn't want to lose his soft object he has found. And as i go off-topic, the girl claims rape and Lennie gets in to trouble with the police. George, the only person Lennie can rely on, grabs Lennie to run away from the police, that look for him.

Sad ending... really unexpecting...

Lennie is mentally disabled and has a tendency to cling to soft things for comfort, such as the girl's dress. He also has trouble understanding social boundaries and appropriate behavior, which contributed to his inability to let go of the dress.

Why are George and Lennie running away from the town weed?

Lennie loves to pet soft things, such as mice and in this case a dress. He sees a girl with a red dress and because he likes it he reaches out to feel the dress. However, the girl becomes distressed and begins to scream. This in turn distresses Lennie and he "gets all mixed up" and he holds on because that is all that he can think to do. But the girl continues screaming and by this time Lennie is extremely scared so all he thinks to do is hold on. He is extremely strong and when George comes after hearing the girl from a distance he has to hit him over the head with a picket fence to make him let go. Upon Lennie letting go, the girl reports Lennie and says that she was raped. So people in Weed start a party to kill Lennie. Lennie didn't actually hurt the girl but he did scare her.
