In reality, John Hancock was extremely wealthy and risked it all on the success of the American Revolution. On May 24, 1775, he began serving as president of the Second Continental Congress. This was the group that approved the Declaration of Independence. It's just the way Hancock signed his name. It was in the center, since it was the first and only signature at that time. The other 55 delegates didn't sign the Declaration until August 2, 1776, or later.

Some say that he was the first one to sign it so he just put his name right in the middle and in rather large letters. The founding fathers realized that they had to write smaller in order to make sure that all the other names would fit.

Some historians say that John Hancock signed all of the author's names and mad his own most prominent.

The most accepted account is that he did it out of defiance to the crown of England. Basically he shouted JOHN HANCOCK declares his independence from England.

He signed as a statement to the King. He has an exact quote that I don't know but paraphrased: I want to be the first name he sentences to death. He basically did it because he wanted to show that he had no fear or regret for his actions. If he was going to be executed it was for standing up for the entire "American" population.

Why do you say put your John Hancock here?

The term "Put your John Hancock on it" refers to a famous signature from American history. John Hancock was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He signed his name in large, bold, ornate handwriting because, as he said, he wanted to be sure that the English would see his name (and therefore know that he was against British rule). John Hancock knew that his life could be in danger by signing the Declaration, but he was willing to accept that risk. Therefore, when you are asked for your "John Hancock," it means that you are supposed to sign a document. We say it to recognize the bravery of the founding fathers, especially bold Mr. Hancock. ------------------------------------------------------- John Hancock was a signatory to the US deceleration of independence. His signature is VERY large and stands out on the document. Thus a "John Hancock" has in the US become a euphemism for 'signature'.
