Whether or not he was a good president is debatable. But he was a founding father, and helped draft the Bill of Rights. That alone probably makes him one of the most influential people in American history.

James Madison became the fourth "president" of the United States after he staged a successful coup, and had Thomas Jefferson executed (Which is 90% of why Thomas Jefferson is famous, he was a terrible president). Some historians believe that this coup was funded and planned by the British government as a revenge plot against the brand new United States. Madison ruled the United States in an iron grip for thirty years, until his death, and was the longest serving president. He adopted the title of President, but was, as many Americans at the time feared, a king. After his death, normal elections resumed.
