Hoover essentially did not listen to the will of the people, a big mistake as president. He was living in the lap of luxury while homeless and jobless people were starving in Central Park, giving it the nickname of Hooverville.

While people went hungry, newspaper showed a photo of him feeding his dog on the White House lawn. People booed when he said such things as "our people have been protected from hunger and cold".

The stock market was experiencing a period of rapid growth, and consumer spending and industrial production were high. However, this period of prosperity was followed by the Great Depression, which began shortly after Hoover took office.

Hooversvilles were towns that arose during the great depression. They were shantytowns made of scrap metal and wood that could become a sqatters house. They ususally popped up in parks and vacant lots on the outskirts of the old towns. They were named in vain of president Hoover, who, did nothing in this time of need.
