This biblical description is but figurative. Adam was formed from the dust of the earth as recorded in scripture. The breathing into Adams nostrels as you say is a term used to describe God putting into Adam his spirit so that he became a living soul.

Somewhat metaphorically, it was like you would give someone CPR (resuscitation) to get him to breathe. Adam needed to start breathing. In the same act, God imbued Adam with an eternal soul , free-will, and knowledge.
