Columbus had a hard time finding men because many thought the world was flat therefore they thought at some point they would fall off the earth, but some of them thought there were monsters that would tip the boat or something like that.

Actually, he didn't have a hard time. Most of his crew came from the prison/jails and some were Jewish. An order was given by the Crown that all Jews in Spain were to leave by Oct, 1492 and many were on his ships.
