Darwin became puzzled by the diversity of life. And, especially, he was puzzled that on many different Galapagos Islands, birds of a single sort differed very slightly from birds on other islands. This is only a small sample of what Darwin observed. But it started his puzzlement. Eventually he had the idea that species were not 'fixed' forever, but mutable enough that one species might become another. Inspired by evidence, he built up the theory of Natural Selection, which he explained in On the Origin of Species.Darwin was a careful man, careful of careful observation and no doubt finding the natural world beloved, he was inspired to think of a way it had developed, changed over time, naturally and mechanically. I think there must have been some inspiration, some love of the natural world in Darwin for why else would he end with phrases such as 'endless forms most beautiful'?
