From 1763 to 1960 Rio de Janeiro was the Brazilian capital. In 1956, Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek de Olveira [September 12, 1902-August 22, 1976] ordered the building of Brasilia to fulfill an article in Brazil's Constitution. Dating from 1891, the article stated that the capital should be moved from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location within the country.

It took 41 months to build Brasilia, from 1956 to 1960. Brasilia officially was inaugurated as the capital on April 21, 1960. The building and the inauguration were completed during Jota Ka's* presidential term, which ran from 1956 until 1961.

*The popular nickname for the Brazilian President was based on his initials, 'JK'.

Brasilia is one of only three created capitals in the world, along with Canberra, Australia and Washington DC, USA. The capital of Brazil was in disupte as to whether it should be Rio de Janiero or Sao Paulo. To solve this dispute a new city was created to be an administrative base. The same happened between New York City and Boston in the USA and Sydeny and Melbourne in Australia.

Two main reasons:

1) Strategic reasons: Rio de Janeiro is on the coastline and they wanted to move the capital inland in case of an invasion. It is much easier to defend a capital inland because you have more time to prepare versus a capital that is on the shore.

2) to Develop the heart of Brazil. Until the construction of Brasilia, there wasn't anything there. The central region of Brazil was totally undeveloped as the population lived mostly along the coastline. They figure that if they moved the capital inland, people would move there and develop that area. They were proved right!

National Security: it was believed that with the capital on the coast, she was vulnerable to attack foreigners. This military-strategic argument has its precursor Hipólito José da Costa and influenced the early Republicans, as well as the military after World War 2. They believed that with the capital within the threat of invasion would be negligible.

Internalization of the Population and Development and National Integration: Due to historical and economic factors in the Brazilian population was concentrated along the coast, leaving the interior of the country sparsely populated and economically forgotten. Thus the transfer of capital to the countryside would force the displacement of a population and the opening of highways linking the capital to various regions of the country, leading to greater economic integration. It is noteworthy that today, even with the transfer of capital, the North and Midwest are still sparsely populated compared to other regions. In what regards the economic aspect, capital construction and opening of roads allowed the expansion of the "agricultural frontier" for the Midwest, especially the cultivation of soybeans for export and further development of livestock for slaughter.

Brazil's New Symbol: The JK government (1956-60), Brazil has undergone rapid changes. The Target Plan opens the economy to foreign capital and large-scale entry of multinational corporations makes the country go through the "modernization", ie, was no longer rural and has become predominantly urban-industrial. Construction of the new capital (based on modern architectural and urban design) should work as an example to be followed by other cities.

Depart from the rulers (the capital) the concentration of activities and popular pressure: The Rio de Janeiro as the center of the country's traditional activities (ports, industries, commerce, etc.) and strong demographic pressure, so the government was subject to pressures Popular, which manifested itself in the form of marches
