Medusa didn't just 'go out' with Poseidon. They had sex in Athena's temple (which is greatly disrespectful, also considering that Athena is one of the three virgin goddesses). So, she got mad and turned Medusa into a gorgon. That is why Medusa hates Athena.

What was the purpose of a gorgon in ancient Greece?

A gorgon is a sort of ugly monstr that comes from Hades' Healm of Darkness. The main story told about gorgons is about Medusa who was the most beatuiful gorgon. She was raped in the Temple of Athena by Poseidon. Because Athena had a great rivalry with Poseidon she turned Medusa's hair to snakes and made her face so scary that it would turn anyone who looked at it to stone. Medusa died when she was beheaded by Perceus who slayed her by looking at her through a mirror rather then looking at her directly. Medusa's head was later used as a weapon by Perceus.
