The idea that the phrase of Manifest Destiny, coined by the Harvard educated journalist, John L. O'Sullivan in 1845 was the real cause of US expansion, fails to be of much worth. While newspaper editors found it a reader friendly idea, US expansion began well before 1845.With the land acquired from the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and the vast territories ceded by Mexico due to its defeat in the Mexican War, economics and common sense would drive settlers to move west. It seems the Great Britain was able to move coast to coast in Canada, was without any manifest destiny. It was a logical geo-political move. The same can be said with the US expansion west. Why obtain the land, and not use it? In summary, the US Louisiana Purchase and the Mexico cession gave Americans the incentive to use the land acquired.

As an aside, the 1867 purchase of Alaska, was also not based on any "destiny".

We felt that we needed to expand more into mexicos territory to the ocean. This justified war with Mexico and in my opinion was also the beginning of US Imperialism.
