The Soviets actually took a neutral, but more leaning towards Hitler, side at the beginning of the war (look-up the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact). The primary assumed reason for why Hitler decided to invade the Soviet Union was simply because he was loosing against the Britain, and he had always had an eye on Russia, and at this time Russia was re-equipping it's army, had Hitler attacked in 1942 he wouldn't have won and I believe he knew this, and because he knew this he also knew the perfect time to strike, so he went for it.
Not to mention that Mein Komp places Communists as the enemies of the Aryan Race, making them the Nazi's mortal enemies…
