The size or span of people's hands is very variable, especially between men and women - so would not be accurate enough. Hand span is a distance between the tip of thumb and tip of little finger but the hand must be open.
Because it's not standard. Everybody's hand is different.
If you owned a store where you sold silk and I came in to buy 20 handspans of it,
you would want to measure it with your 2-yr-old daughter's hand, whereas I would
bring along Hulk Hogan to measure it with his hand. You and I would get into an awful
argument, I'd lose the silk, and you'd lose the sale, and a customer. It wouldn't be a
pleasant experience for either of us.
The hand span varies a great deal among persons.
hands, or half hands. this is approximately 4 to 6 inches.Horses are measured in hands. One hand is equal to four inches. For example, a horse may be 15.2 hh (hands) tall. There is no 15.5, it goes from 15.3 to 16.0, ect.
In the case of measuring horses it is equal to four inches.
Because thats science
Here is a non-scientist's view. Density is a ratio, and as such it is an abstract expression of the nature of a certain kindof matter. Density is indepenent of how much or how little matter you are talking about. Density is the amount of mass per a unit of volume of the material. Length, on the other hand, is a characteristic of a given piece of measureable material, independent of the make-up of the material. Every rigid physical object has some linear measurement that can be considered length. The length of the object can be modified without changing in any way the nature of the matter. In a given reference frame, the density of a given kind of matter is constant.
To estimate length without a ruler, it is best to compare it to something else. For instance, a person's thumb typically measures around two inches from the tip of the nail to the place where it attaches to the rest of the hand. That might be a good tool one could use for measuring.
measuring the height of horses

Not all people have hands and feet of the same size. As a standard, this sucks.
You will always have your measuring device with you. The problems is that everyone's hands will be different sizes and it will only work for you.
A sewing gauge is a small ruler about 6 inches in length. It has a sliding marker that is set to a specific measurement and comes in handy when measuring the same length repeatedly (for example when marking a hem).
There is actually a set measurement for a "hand". The length of a hand is 9 inches and is called a "span". the width of a hand is 4 inches.
a measuring stick is cut to length so you can make a piece to match a broken board you go to where the broken board is cut he stick to the same length bring the stick to the saw mill hand it to the carpenter say i need a board this long rulers are a stick with marks on em you can measure for two or even more boards hand the carpenter the ruler and say i need one board 10 marks long and another that's seven marks long a ruler requires reading a measuring stick doesnt
You can tell the size of your hand by measuring around your hand using a tape measure across your palm.
It depends on what you are trying to measure. Measuring the length of a playing field in centimetres will give absurdly large numbers whereas in metres the number will be sensible. On the other hand, the length of a paper clip is best measured in centimetres.
