Shame adversely affects every aspect of your life.

Shame is a painful and ongoing feeling of distress and humiliation caused by a concious belief of being unacceptable at your core, e.g., "I am wrong." Your default mode is "worthless."

Shame differs from guilt in that guilt is an uncomfortable feeling of regret about a specific behavior, e.g., "I did wrong." Your default mode is "worthy, but not perfect".

Shame is a distorted sense of yourself that you learned -- before you developed healthy ego defenses -- in response to the shaming behavior of others.

Shame is treatable with psycotherapy which provides a safe and supportive relationship within which to explore how you came to feel worthless -- no one is born feeling this way. Once trust is established, a more accurate picture of yourself will emerge from the distortions that you learned and came to believe. Freed from the terrible burdens of shame, you will be able to live a more fulfilling life.
