The umbilical cord is like an extension cord dining from the mother to the baby transferring blood oxygen and sustenance. So when the mother takes the drugs they enter her blood stream and will be pumped to the baby through the umbilical cord. This is the same reason you should not smoke drink alcohol or take drugs your doctor does not tell you to take.
