Many reasons:
1) If you are just setting up a new tank the goldfish will die due to unstable water conditions. This is a common way to start the growth of proper bacteria for the biological filtration of your tank. The goldfish die (pull them imidiatly) and produce amonia which coverts to nitrites then once it levels to .00 parts per million and a ph of 7.0 you're established with a properly conditioned tropical fish enviroment.
2) If the tank has already been established and the fish that are still alive are the ones that have been in your tank longer id say you probably have high amonia, nitrites or a low ph. The older fish are more conditioned to you habits and tank upkeep.
3) In an established tank your ammonia should read .00ppm, nitrites should read .00ppm and for goldfish ph should read 7.5-8.0ppm. Also, they are cold water fish that dont require a heater.
Hope that helps. :)
