Vitamin D is produced by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D also occurs in some foods and in vitamin D-enriched dairy and grain products.

People who have a vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough vitamin D because:
1. they do not get enough sunlight for their bodies to produce vitamin D. They may not get enough sunlight if they are home bound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, have dark skin, wear sunscreen, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure.
2. they may have medical problems which affect their intestine's ability to absorb vitamin D from the food they eat.
3. they may adhere to a strict vegan diet and do not eat fish, fish oil, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk, or beef liver, all of which contain vitamin D.
4. their kidneys may not be able to convert vitamin D to its active form.
5. they may be obese, which affects the release of vitamin D into their circulation.

The body absorbs Vitamin D through exposure to the sun. As people spend more time indoors avoiding exposure to the sun, they become deficient in Vitamin D.

Vitamin K is necessary for the production of Clotting Factors II, VII, IX and X. So a vitamin K deficiency could lead to a bleeding disorder. Additionally vitamin K is necessary for the production of the anticoagulant protein C and protein S. Inhibition of Vitamin K function is also associated with clotting disorders though for this to occur there has to be a deficiency in either proteins C or S.

It depends on the type of vitamin deficiency. If it's a vitamin C deficiency, then the guinea pig may develop a disease called scurvy. What happens when someone suffers from vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D has fat soluble compounds known as calciferols. Vitamin D is not a true vitamin because it can be absorbed by your skin when cholosteral reacts with ultraviolet light from the sun. Sunscreens and clothes can block UV sunlight rays from reaching the skin and would cause vitamin D deficiency. To help prevent this possibilty, foods or drinks like milk or vitamin water would work very well with Vitamin D2 and D3. However, a very severe deficiency of vitamin D can lead to softening of bones called the osteomalacia in adults and rickets in teens and children.
