Mountains are created in several ways. The most common way is when tectonic plates crash into one another. The major land masses of Earth move and crash into each other. Crash isn't the best word because it suggests something happening suddenly. This process takes millions of years. As one of the enormous land masses collides with another they do so with huge forces this cause one to slide under the other. This collision both lifts and pushes into the other. This pushing into the edge creates wrinkles. These wrinkles are the mountain ranges. The Andes, Alps, Appalachian and Himalayas and several others were formed this way
