The processor is the main difference. It's the brain of the computer.

The G3 was the start of the more powerful chips. Real simply, PPC (PowerPC) chips have different speed ratings, as far as there base or core speeds, G4 has a faster core then a G-3 and the G-5 is faster then a G-4. Basically if a G3 computer has a 550 mgz chip it's actually slower then a 500mgz g4 computer because the G4's core architecture can process it faster.

The same way as today, the i3 is slower then the i5, the i5 is slower then the i7 processors.
