The Afghan Mujahedin (i.e. fighters of Jihad) were the forces the existed in Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s. They were led by Osama bin Laden. However, after the withdrawal of the Soviet Union from Afghanistan, they began to coalesce into an organization devoted to continuing the Jihad, but against the United States. This would require a different organization style since a guerrilla war was not going to work to target a distant power. This was the formation of al-Qaeda. Since most of the same people shifted into this new organization and it was also led by Osama bin Laden, people view the Afghan Mujahedin as the start of al-Qaeda.
