Fossil fuels are considered indirect solar energy sources because all fossil fuels were formed from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago :)

However, there is a growing body of science that asserts that the concept of fossil fuels is totally erroneous, and indeed, a myth. Click on the link below for an interesting article that supports that notion.

Oil comes from dead plants. To make plants grow, there must be photosynthesis, which in the simplest form takes energy from the sun, water and carbon dioxide to create sugar and other organic molecules. So, the chemicals in plants can be considered to have locked in energy from the organic chemicals, which is released if they are burned as plants, or millions of years later as fossil fuels.

All energy comes from the sun! So.... Fossil fuels are made up of plants and aniamls that have been buried over time. All animals receive their energy from plants; some animals are further up the food chain an get their energy from other animals, but if you follow the food chain to the primary producer it is the plant! Plants get the energy for photosynthesis from the sun; so fossil fuels are buried sunshine!

How was coal created?

Coal is formed from plant life buried in the Earth millions of years ago. Like Petroleum and natural gas, it is a carbon-based fossil fuel. Coal is called a fossil fuel because it was formed from the remains of vegetation that grew as long ago as 400 million years. It is often referred to as "buried sunshine" because the plants which formed the coal captured the energy from the sun through photosynthesis to create the compounds that make up plant tissues. The main element in the plant material is carbon, which gives coal most of its energy. Most of our coal was formed millions of years ago, when Earth was covered by steamy swamps. As plants and trees died, their remains sank into the bottom of swampy areas, accumulating layers upon layers and eventually forming a soggy, dense material called peat. Sandstones and other sedimentary rocks were formed, and pressure caused by the weight squeezed water from the peat. Increasingly deeper burial and the heat associated with it gradually changed the material into coal.Tree's
