Why are death and black metal bands so obssessed with Satanism and religion?

Because it's interesting, because they have a personal axe to grind about religion and because in black metal, those themes are virtually a part of the requirements to be a black metal band.

Personally, I dislike dwelling on such things. However, I have heard that during black Mass, human sacrifices might be preformed. Priests commonly subject themselves to physical torture as well. Not my type of religion. ACTUALLY Black Mass is NOT part of Satanism; it was used in the old days as propaganda against Pagans or Witches or what have you. It is against the Satanic religion to harm a person, child, or animal of any kind, and true Satanists never sacrifice living things. In Satanism, the symbol of the Baphomet is used, which is an inverted pentagram with the head of a goat in it, to represent Satan. A sword or staff is used to call the respective demons at different times in ritual.

As for Kamelot, the Albums The Black Halo and Epica were based on Goethe's Faust, a classical theater piece with a similar concept (man sells his soul to the devil for what he want). They actually have rather motivating means to them and more are about the great questions of life than they are about Satanism. In the end, the main character defeats Satan as well. No, they are not satanic, although they dabble into religion in many of their songs.
