It was very difficult to create the impression of moving colour images by transmitted electronic signals in the early days of television, but eventually 'colour tv' was invented.
There are different ways that colour is made to appear on tv screens, but all involve the transmission of electronic signals to the tv set. The tv interprets those signals and rapidly makes a flickering coloured display. The flicker is too fast for the human eye to detect, it all looks like normal motion and the colours all look like true (or almost true) colours.
This is an 'optical trick', so that you see, not a lot of different coloured dots, but the resulting blended shade or tone. To illustrate: In painting we know that the colour green can be made by mixing blue and yellow paints. This basic idea is behind the creation of coloured tv pictures, but a different set of physical characteristics of light are used.

I believe the color television was a large innovation because it gave more of a degree of realism to the already huge trend of watching television. It made you feel like you were more "there" if you know what I mean.
