People can become poor for a multitude of reasons. Some of them may have lost their jobs, some may not have had a fulfilling education, and some may have a low paying job. Illiteracy is not a prevalent problem in Canada or the United States, but it could be a contributing factor in these and other countries.

The working poor is a group of people who have a job, but are being paid minimum wage. They receive a regular paycheque, but the amount of money isn't enough to cover the cost of bills (hydro, electric, TV, etc), medical expenses, food costs, transportation, miscellaneous (clothing, recreation, etc), and other costs. Many of these people go without cars, computers, and televisions so that they can spend their money paying off debts and providing for their children.
