AnswerThe account of the raising of Lazarus in John 11 makes it clear there were two reasons for his being raised from the dead.

The first is to give glory to God, who was certainly glorified by this miracle as Jesus prayed to His heavenly Father before calling Lazarus forth, indicating the unity of purpose and dependence while in His earthly state on God's power.

Secondly, and even more importantly, Lazarus was raised to draw attention to who Jesus was, as the one sent by God, that is, the Messiah of Israel. The result was that many believed on Jesus because of this miracle. However, as is often the case, as shown in verse 47 (and the following verses) below, persecution and eventual death were to follow for Jesus.

John 11:4 (King James Version)4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. John 11:40-47 (King James Version)40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

There are also a number of other possibilities, which, although not stated in the text are nevertheless possible sub-plots and quite compatible with the theme of 'glory to God and His Son.' Lazarus being raised as mentioned above brought many people to a realization of faith in Jesus. This no doubt glorified God and also as such popularity was one of the factors which led to His crucifixion (at least one of the Gospel writers records that Jesus was delivered 'for envy')this also indirectly led to God being glorified through the atonement.

Further to this, it could be seen as part of Jesus' care for both Mary and Martha, who, in days without social security were left without their brother to care for them. This compassion also brings glory to God when we see it for what it is.

Of course, the ultimate aim of bringing people to saving faith is vastly more important. This is not pride or self promotion on Jesus' part but just simple truth. The world was desperately in need of a savior. Jesus was Himself that savior. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Him drawing attention to it.

Because he hated the dea!

Answer:

To defeat death, and become the Author of the Salvation of mankind.

"...Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the Firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep [died]... For as in Adam all die, so in Christ SHALL ALL BE MADE ALIVE. But each in his own turn: Christ, the Firstfruits; then, WHEN HE COMES, those who belong to Him.

"Then THE END WILL COME, when He hands over the Kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority and power... The last enemy to be destroyed is DEATH." (I Cor.15:20-26 NIV)

Jesus rose from the dead in order to... by the conclusion of God's plan... REMOVE THE EXISTENCE OF DEATH by giving men IMMORTALITY!!

"...the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with IMMORTALITY...

"...then the saying that is written will come True: 'Death has been swallowed up in Victory.' 'Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?' The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." [verses 52-57]

The first death we die is "appointed" to us... after which comes Judgment Day [Heb.9:27]... and the opportunity for the Gift of Eternal Life... or "the Second Death."

"...the dead were Judged according to what they had done... Then death and Hades [the grave] were thrown into the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire is the SECOND DEATH." (Rev.20:12-14 NIV)

Jesus rose from the dead to save man from the coming "Second Death."

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the Second Death." (Rev.2:11 NIV)

One would expect that Lazarus would have become famous throughout Judea and even the entire Roman Empire, as the story of his death and resurrection spread. He would have been swamped with well-wishers and the incredulous, who never believed that a person could be resurrected after being dead for four days, and already entombed. In spite of this, not one contemporary author ever mentioned the resurrection of Lazarus, so we can not really know what happened to him.

Well, why do you think so?

Not everyone can rise from the dead.

It's a very amazing act.

The only expected time any dead person will rise from the dead is at the second coming of Jesus Christ, anything outside of that is a miracle.

On first reading of John chapter 11, Jesus was anxious to raise Lazarus because he was the brother of his very close friends, Martha and Mary (it was that Mary who had anointed Jesus with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair). He also hoped that by seeing, they would believe that he had been sent by God.

However, no other gospel mentions this, the greatest miracle performed by Jesus. Luke does mention the sisters Mary and Martha, but they are unrelated to Lazarus, who is only mentioned in Luke's Gospel in a parable about death and resurrection. Scholars say that John's Gospel was inspired by Luke's Gospel, so it can be assumed that its story of Mary, Martha and Lazarus was also inspired by that in Luke, where there was only a hypothetical resurrection of Lazarus.

The question then become, why did the author of John's Gospel write of Jesus raising Lazarus. Part of the answer is certainly in verse 11:42 - by reading the story of Jesus raising Lazarus, people will believe that he was sent by God.

The literal reason for Lazarus being raised from the dead is that Jesus arrived to late to prevent his death. As his sisters, Martha and Mary are presented in John's Gospel as very close friends of Jesus, he decided to raise Lazarus back to life.

The literary reason for Lazarus being raised from the dead is that the author of John's Gospel wanted a magnificent, awe-inspiring event to end the mission of Jesus and to justify his arrest and crucifixion. This event is not found in the synoptic gospels, where the trigger for Jesus' arrest was the Cleansing of the Temple.

Some modern Christians provide a further reason, which is to draw attention to who Jesus was, but in the earlier gospels, especially Mark, Jesus was anxious not to draw attention to himself.

Most famous person other than Jesus to be resurrected from the dead?

If i recall, the 'only' other person was Lazarus.

Were others resurrected when Jesus was?

Jesus was the only person to be resurrected from the dead in a resurrection body. His body was changed from a physical body to a resurrection body just as Christians who are resurrected on "that' day will receive a resurrection body. Matthew 27:51-54 gives some signs that occurred at the death of Christ. One was that some graves were opened on that day but the live bodies did not emerge from the tombs until Jesus resurrected three days later. These people came forth from the graves much like Lazarus did. They were revived but not resurrected and they were not in their resurrection bodies. We are not told how long these people remain alive before they died again..........to be resurrected with the rest of the saints on resurrection day, just as Lazarus died physically some time later after Jesus brought him back from the dead ....... to be resurrected with the rest of us on resurrection day.

How many people in the Bible are called Lazarus?

A:There are only two people called Lazarus in the Bible, although they share much more than their name in common.Luke contains a brief story of Jesus visiting the sisters, Mary and Martha, while Lazarus is only in a parable (Luke 16:20-31 ) that mentions his death and resurrection hypothetically. .John 11:43-44 contains an important episode, in which Jesus visited the sisters, Mary and Martha, and resurrected their dead brother, Lazarus. The coincidences of name, death and hypothetical or actual resurrection of Lazarus is taken as strong evidence that the concept was taken by the author of John from Luke's Gospel.

What great miracle appears only in John?

A:The author of John's Gospel wrote a story of the resurrection of Lazarus, loosely based on a parable found in Luke's Gospel, and made this the trigger for the arrest of Jesus, rather than the Cleansing of the Temple, which was therefore moved to the beginning of the Gospel.Luke and John are the only books in the Bible that mention sisters called Mary and Martha, and also the only gospels that mention Lazarus, but in Luke, the resurrection of Lazarus was only hypothetical. John has an important episode, in which Jesus visited the sisters, Mary and Martha, and resurrected their dead brother, Lazarus (John 11:43-44).
