The Philistines were a sea people who arrived in Palestine around 1200 BCE and soon occupied the coastal strip and foothills from the Egyptian border north to approximately the location of present-day Tel Aviv. They were eventually assimilated by the Canaanites to their immediate north. The Philistines are important in the Old Testament because Abraham encountered them during his travels through the Promised Land around 2000 BCE, and sojourned in their land many days. They are also important because they are mentioned in the Exodus. Finally, they are important because the Israelites are said to have fought many battles with them, before finally conquering them and occupying their land.
