Mormon Pioneers settled in Utah for a few reasons. First, they had been persecuted and kicked out of their settlements in several other states and wanted to find a place where they could practice their religion in peace. Second, their prophet, Joseph Smith, prophesied that they would find this place of peace in the Rocky Mountains. After Joseph Smith was killed, they headed toward the Rocky Mountains until they found this refuge.
