For most of the war it was Abraham Lincoln(1809-1865), who proclaimed that the conflict was ultimately intended to "preserve the Union" of the United States. Actual hostilities began a month after his inauguration, on April 12, 1861. The major fighting in the War ended just 6 days before Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865. Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, VA, on April 9. The final shots of the war took place in June, 1865, after Vice President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) succeeded to the Presidency on Lincoln's death.

(Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was the President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865, leading the government of the South.)
