John Winthrop (son of Massachusett's colonial governor of the same name) established the colony officially in 1635, and became the first governor of the Saybrook Colony.
Thomas Hooker and about 100 of his followers established the Hartford colony in 1636 and John Haynes was the first governor of the separate Connecticut colony in 1639.

The first explorer in Connecticut was Aderian Block. He founded it for the Dutch in 1614.
The famous governor of Plymouth Colony was William Bradford, who later wrote the history of their journey. He was not, however, the first governor of Plymouth, nor the "governor of the Mayflower." John Carver was voted, or confirmed, governor of Plymouth Colony after the signing of the Mayflower Compact. He died during the first year and Bradford was elected. There was also Christopher Martin who was "governor" of the Mayflower, something that had been decided before departure. This only meant he had been put in charge of getting provisions and organizing, though he was heavily criticized for his lack of skills by Bradford and others.

It was when the general court of Connecticut formally received the Charter won from King Charles II of England by the diplomacy of Governor John Winthrop, Jr. 25 years later, with the succession of James II to the throne, Connecticut's troubles began. Sir Edmund Andros, his Majesty's agent, arrived in Hartford with an armed force to seize the Charter.
