John Winthrop (son of Massachusett's colonial governor of the same name) established the colony officially in 1635, and became the first governor of the Saybrook Colony.

Thomas Hooker and about 100 of his followers established the Hartford colony in 1636 and John Haynes was the first governor of the separate Connecticut colony in 1639.

The first state governor after the Declaration of Independence was Jonathan Trumbull (aka Trumble), who had been the colonial governor beginning in 1769.

---

The first governor of Connecticut Colony was John Haynes, who served in 1639 and several later one-year terms.
