The first written account of freeing of slaves is Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery, so I guess you could say they were the first free slaves.

It was the first independent African republic. Monrovia, the country's capital city, was named after U.S. President James Monroe, who arranged for its founding. The name Liberia comes from the Latin phrase which means free land.
