Did federation have a significant impact on the lives of ordinary Australians?

Yes, In 1901, six Australian states joined together in political and economic union, creating an internal free trade area and adopting a common external tariff. This paper investigates the impact of federation on Australia's internal and international trade flows by studying changes in the "border effect" over this time. This is possible because Australian states reported intra-Australian trade prior to 1901 and for eight years after federation. The results indicate that federation itself produced little change in Australia's trade patterns, but that the border effect increased substantially between 1906 and 1909 when the protectionist Lyne Tariff was imposed.

What is the value of an Australian Centenary of Federation?

If you refer to the packaged "Centenary of Federation medallion" given to school children, probably not much since there were over 2 million issued. They are a "Collectible" and value will incease over time. If you refer to the "Centenary of Federation medallion" included as part of the 2001 Proof set of coins, it will be worth nothing without the rest of the set.

Why did the Australian flag change after federation?

The Australian flag did not change after Federation. Because Australia only became a nation with Federation, prior to this time there was no Australian flag. Each of the states, or colonies, had its own flag, but there was no Australian flag. After the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed on 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth government held a design competition for a new national flag. There were 32,000 entries in the competition, and most featured the Union Jack, the Southern Cross, or native animals. Five almost identical entries were selected to share the 200 pound prize. On 3 September 1901, the new Australian flag flew for the first time from the top of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. The flag was simplified, and approved by King Edward VII in 1902. Note : Australia did not become a Nation at Federation it became a single British Colony with six States . The Federal Parliament was classed as a ' Colonial Legislature ' and the National flag remained the Union Flag of the UK . The current flag we fly was an ' Ensign ' ( sub flag ) of the British Empire .
