Jefferson Davis was elected as president of the confederate states in 1861.
Superficially, he looked right for the job - a traditional planter-aristocrat with a respectable record in the Mexican War.
In fact, he did not measure up to the job, being unable to control either his own cabinet or the feuding Generals he had appointed.
At the surrender, his character failed the test, as he scuttled away from his responsibilities, talking wildly about continuing the struggle from somewhere across the Mississippi.
The Confederate States of America did not exist in 1860 and only one state, South Carolina, had seceded from the Union by the end of that year. The president of the Confederate States would later be Jefferson Davis who was elected provisionally in February 1861. He would be the only Confederate president.
