Socrates was a gifted thinker who helped lay the foundation of western philosophy. He was born in 470 BC, in Athens, Greece. The methods he used and the concepts he proposed, along with his courageous defense of his ideas against his enemies, profoundly influenced the philosophical and moral tenor of western thought over the centuries. His refusal to compromise his intellectual integrity in the face of a death sentence set an example for the entire world to follow!
Socrates was charged for corrupting the youth with his teachings and was sentenced to death penalty, however he took his own life. He died by drinking the poison called hemlock Of his death penalty. When given this he said: "I have lived under the protection of this government so why should i turn my back now?" And basically just drank the hemlock and fell asleep and died. He died in 399 BC.
If you want to know what he actually said and how he argued then read Plato's book The Republic.
Socrates made lots of fallacies in his arguments however he was the first person that we know to devote his life to understanding of the world and asking difficult questions.
Socrates is one of the greatest philosophers that has ever lived. Because he belonged to the appropriate time period, he is one of the few who could entertain any contradictions to Plato and Aristotle.
Vivid impression means strong impression. For example, "my boyfriend made a vivid impression on my parents, and because of that they knew exactly what he was like."
An everlasting impression is an impression that stays with someone forever. You've heard of a first impression right? Well it's just that, but sticks with someone forever. It can be good or bad
Did you get the impression that she wasn't telling the truth? I get the impression that you don't want to go on a second date because you haven't returned my calls. The teacher will get the impression that you're interested in the topic when you answer lots of questions in class.
Crito says to do what people think is right, but Socrates says you must do what you think is right.
A first impression is your first thoughts about someone. For example if you saw someone how was dirty and smelly and rude to you your first impression of them is that they are not that kind and not much of a person you want to know. You never get a first impression again, so if that smelly, dirty person got clean and wanted to be friends with you, you would still think back to the rude person who used to smell. Your first impression therefore is your last impression. Another word for impression would be register- if something registers with you, it means you have noticed it and will probably remember it later.
Well this is kind of an opinion question, but my impression of Socrates was that he believes in what he preaches, and that he will stand by that no matter what (life or death).
The impression about the kind of man that Socrates was after reading the apology is that he was really good at heart. He tried to make it right with fellow men and his creator.
