Hiroo Onoda was a Japanese Army intelligence officer who was in the Philippines during World War II. He refused to believe that Japan had surrendered to the Allies until being found by a young Japanese tourist in 1974. He only came out of the jungle when he was ordered to do so by his former commanding officer.
His story is told in the book "My Thirty-year War."
The last Japanese soldier to surrender was Captain Fumio Nakahira who held out until April, 1980, before being discovered at Mt. Halcon on Mindoro Island in the Philippines. Before that, there was Onoda Hiroo, discovered in the jungle of Lubang Island on March 11, 1974, twenty-nine years after the war ended.
Daniel Onoda is 5' 7 1/2".
