He was a race driver from the Nashville, Tennessee area who grew up in an impoverished area and worked as a repossessor while also working on racecars. He competed at the Nashville Fairgrounds raceway and in the latter 1980s was hired to do film work for Hendrick Motorsports. In 1990 he was hired by the George Bradshaw race team to race Winston Cup, but lost this ride in early 1993. He drove in the Busch Series in 1993 and then was hired to drive a second Felix Sabates Pontiac in 1994 before being hired by Richard Petty. Hamilton clicked with Petty and won twice, in 1996 and 1997, but decided to join Morgan-McClure Motorsports in 1998; he won at Martinsville in 1998 but the ride dried up in 2000.
He joined Andy Petree's team in 2001 and won at Talladega, but Petree's team lost sponsorship as 2002 went on. Hamilton by this time had built a race shop for the Craftsman Truck Series and began racing there in the late 1990s. Following a vicious crash at Richmond in September 2002 he devoted himself full time to the Truck Series.
Illness caught up to Hamilton in 2005 and he quit racing. He passed away in January 2007.
