"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law"

Born in Leamington Spa, England in 1875, Aleister Crowley was a lyric and dramatic poet, novelist, journalist, mountaineer, explorer, Chess player, graphic designer, drug experimenter, yogi, ceremonial Magickian, prophet, early freedom fighter, human rights activist, philosopher, and artist. Compared at one point to Sir Richard Burton, and on the other hand referred to as "the most evil man in the world", Crowley is best known today as the author of the twentieth century's most influential textbooks on occultism, and the founder of Thelema- a philosophy and way of life which overlaps with the set of practices and symbols commonly called "Magick".

Described in a 2002 British poll as the seventy-third greatest Briton of all time, Crowley was hated as much as he was admired. Member of the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (alongside the poet W.B Yeats), as well as a co-founder of the A∴A∴ and eventually a leader of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), he caused many ructions amongst his peers, and accusations of everything from child sacrifice to publicizing secret society information, followed him throughout his life.

Crowley died on 1st December 1947. Cause of death was recorded as a respiratory infection, although many reports suggest heroin overdose.

See the following related links for more information on Crowley, his life, and why he is still such an enigmatic figure.
